UN Mission Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Libya
On Tuesday, the mission highlighted the severity of ongoing armed clashes in Tripoli, noting that for the second consecutive night, residential districts have been heavily affected, jeopardizing the safety of numerous non-combatants.
"UNSMIL is deeply alarmed by escalating violence in densely populated neighborhoods of Tripoli for the second night in a row, placing countless civilians at grave risk," the mission posted on X.
In light of the volatile situation, it made a pressing appeal for an "immediate, unconditional" cessation of hostilities in all civilian-populated zones.
The statement emphasized that continued violence threatens to exacerbate the already fragile security environment in both Tripoli and the broader Libyan region.
The mission implored all involved factions to make the protection of non-combatants a primary concern and urged them to engage "without delay in serious, good-faith dialogue" aimed at resolving tensions through peaceful means.
UNSMIL reiterated its backing for any efforts toward mediation and reduction of tensions.
In addition, the mission extended the use of its “good office” to support conflict resolution and promote dialogue to safeguard national peace and stability.
The recent outbreak of violence began on Monday in Tripoli, particularly affecting the Salah al-Din and Abu Salim areas.
According to Libyan press sources, the clashes erupted after the reported killing of Abdel Ghani al-Kikli, leader of the Stability Support Apparatus linked to the Presidential Council.
Libya has been mired in chaos since 2011, when the long-standing regime of Muammar Gaddafi was toppled following over forty years of rule.
