Trump Says He Will Remove Sanctions on Syria
This decision came after dialogues with Turkish Leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and other prominent leaders from the Middle East region.
Speaking at an investment conference in Riyadh, Trump explained that the decision followed discussions with key figures.
"After discussing the situation in Syria with the crown prince, your crown prince, and also with President Erdogan of Turkey, who called me the other day and asked for a very similar thing, among others, and friends of mine, people that I have a lot of respect for in the Middle East, I will be ordering the cessation of sanctions against Syria in order to give them a chance at greatness," he stated.
Referring to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who was present at the forum, Trump emphasized the importance of this moment for Syria. "But now it's their time to shine. It's their time to shine.
We're taking them all off," he declared, adding, "So, I say, 'Good luck Syria. Show us something very special, like they've done, frankly, in Saudi Arabia.’"
This declaration follows a recent statement from Trump indicating he was contemplating such a measure.
The decision aligns with broader international efforts to reconsider punitive economic actions against Damascus, originally imposed during the tenure of the now-deposed Assad government.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron revealed last week that the European Union would progressively ease its sanctions on Syria.
His announcement came as he hosted Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Paris.
A White House representative later confirmed that Trump is scheduled to meet al-Sharaa on Wednesday during his ongoing visit to Saudi Arabia.
However, no further specifics about the upcoming meeting were immediately provided.
