Zelensky claims ‘Russian narratives’ control US
Zelensky criticized the United States for seeking neutrality, arguing that such a stance is harmful given America’s past role as Ukraine’s key supporter during President Joe Biden’s administration. Trump, by contrast, has pledged to end the war and significantly cut U.S. support for Kyiv.
The comments come as Washington and Moscow continue talks aimed at brokering a ceasefire. Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, recently met with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the third time in two months to discuss the conflict and broader U.S.-Russia relations.
Although Zelensky had backed a 30-day moratorium on attacks on energy infrastructure negotiated by Trump and Putin, Moscow has accused Ukraine of repeatedly violating the agreement. The Ukrainian leader also criticized U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance for allegedly justifying Putin’s actions and undermining Ukraine’s narrative.
Zelensky suggested that Russia’s propaganda machine has significantly influenced U.S. politics and decision-makers. Despite calling for a transition to diplomacy, he reiterated his mistrust in direct negotiations with Russia, maintaining that such talks cannot be relied upon.
Meanwhile, Trump has again asserted that the war would never have started had he won in 2020, referring to the ongoing conflict as “Biden’s war,” though he acknowledged the complexities of bringing it to an end.
