Sudan Severs Relations with UAE, Accuses Nation of Supporting Rival Force
According to Sudan, this decision follows what it asserts is UAE military support for the RSF, including the provision of sophisticated weaponry reportedly used in recent drone and missile attacks targeting Port Sudan's vital port, airport, and power infrastructure.
Sudan's statement emphasized that the escalating situation in Port Sudan "threatens regional and international security, in particular security in the Red Sea," and cited Article 51 of the UN Charter to affirm Sudan's right to self-defense. The government further declared that Sudan "reserves the right to respond to the aggression by every means to preserve the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity."
This action unfolds against the backdrop of a two-year civil war between the regular army (SAF) and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023 due to disagreements over the transition to civilian rule. The ongoing conflict has devastated urban centers and forced millions to flee their homes.
The United Nations reports that over half of Sudan's 46 million citizens, approximately 25 million people, are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, with famine confirmed in regions like Darfur. Human rights organizations estimate that tens of thousands have perished and around 15 million individuals have been displaced as a result of the conflict.
