Trump Says EU Seeks His Intervention with Unresponsive Kremlin
According to Trump, his administration is currently involved in mediating discussions between Russia and Ukraine, aiming to facilitate a resolution to the ongoing conflict. This comes as a majority of European NATO member states have committed to providing continuous military aid to Kiev, with some even considering the possibility of deploying troops to the region.
During a recent interview on Sunday, the president highlighted his intermediary role, stating, “Do you know that the European Union leaders have asked me to call Putin so many times? Because he doesn’t return their phone calls.”
Trump suggested that, unlike his administration, his Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, had not engaged with Putin, particularly following the February 2022 escalation of the conflict. He also indicated his administration had closer ties with one of the parties involved in potential peace negotiations, though he did not specify which.
Meanwhile, Moscow has consistently stated its willingness to settle disagreements with Western nations through diplomatic channels, despite its proposals regarding NATO expansion in Europe being rejected in 2021. The Russian government has reportedly been receptive to engaging with EU leaders, as demonstrated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's outreach to Putin last November. However, Kiev criticized Berlin's initiative, denouncing it as a form of appeasement towards Russia.
