Court Overturns Ruling Mandating VOA Staff Reinstatement
The prior decision, issued on April 22nd by US District Judge Royce Lamberth, mandated that the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), VOA's parent organization, bring back the affected personnel. Judge Lamberth had concluded that the dismantling of VOA and its affiliated networks, including Radio Free Asia and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks, was likely illegal.
However, the appeals court, in a 2-1 vote, determined that Judge Lamberth did not have the authority to issue such an order, which also aimed to restore $15 million in grants to the impacted networks.
VOA has been largely inactive since March, following an executive order from the Trump administration that initiated the dismantling of USAGM. The agency has not returned to its regular operations since then.
Several reports on Friday suggested that VOA was preparing to restart its broadcasts next week. USAGM did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Saturday.
Established during World War II to combat Nazi propaganda, Voice of America receives funding from the US Congress and broadcasts in 63 languages to audiences in over 100 nations.
