Xi Jinping Plans to Visit Russia for Victory Day

(MENAFN) Chinese Leader Xi Jinping is scheduled to travel to Russia between May 7 and 10, as revealed by the Kremlin on Sunday.

His trip includes attending the Victory Day Parade in Moscow and engaging in dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This visit coincides with the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's triumph over Nazi Germany during World War II.

The Victory Day Parade, held annually in Moscow’s Red Square, will take place on May 9.

This year, over 20 international leaders are anticipated to participate in the ceremonies in the Russian capital.

Notable attendees include Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Slovak Premier Robert Fico, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, among others.

Last month, President Putin initially revealed that he would meet with President Xi during the World War II commemorative events.

He also put forward a 72-hour one-sided ceasefire in Ukraine to align with the celebrations.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed the idea, referring to it as a “theatrical performance.”

Instead, Zelensky advocated for a broader, unconditional 30-day truce. Russian authorities argued that such an extended halt would enable Ukrainian forces to reorganize and replenish their supplies.

In response, Zelensky cautioned international dignitaries planning to attend the Moscow events that Ukraine could not guarantee their security.

According to an official Kremlin statement, “During the negotiations, key issues regarding the further development of comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction will be discussed, as well as current problems on the international and regional agenda.”

The Kremlin also mentioned plans for the “signing of a number of bilateral intergovernmental and interagency documents.”
