Putin Accuses West of Provocation
He emphasized that such an extreme step has not been warranted and voiced his desire that it will never become necessary.
Speaking in a televised conversation with a Russian journalist, Putin stated that the West “wanted to provoke us, wanted to force us to make mistakes.”
The Russian leader affirmed that “there has been no need to use [nuclear] weapons” during the war in Ukraine and added, “I hope it won’t be necessary.”
Putin further asserted that Russia possesses “enough forces and means to bring what was started in 2022 to a logical conclusion” and achieve a successful outcome.
In a related development, Sergey Shoigu, currently serving as secretary of Russia’s National Security Council, declared last month in a statement to the media that nuclear arms could be employed “in the event of aggression” against either Russia or Belarus, regardless of whether the attack is conventional or not.
Shoigu, who previously held the position of defense minister, issued this warning while NATO countries in Europe were deliberating over the possibility of dispatching troops to Ukraine following a potential ceasefire.
Shoigu reaffirmed that the involvement of international forces in Ukraine might trigger a direct clash between Russia and NATO, which he warned could intensify into a nuclear conflict.
