Jagmeet Singh Resigns as NDP Leader
In a message posted late Monday on X, Singh expressed his disappointment over the results, stating, "I am disappointed that we could not win more seats," but also conveyed a sense of optimism for the future of his party, stating, "hope" for its future.
Singh shared his belief that despite the loss, the NDP will continue to uphold its values. "I KNOW that we will always choose hope over fear," he affirmed in his message.
He also reflected on the emotional toll of the defeat during a speech in British Columbia, where he also lost his own seat. "We may lose sometimes, and those losses hurt," Singh admitted.
However, he emphasized that setbacks should not lead to giving up. "It's tough, but we are only defeated if we stop fighting," he said.
He also spoke about the importance of persevering, stating, "We're only defeated when we believe those that tell us that we can never dream of a better Canada, a fairer Canada, a more compassionate Canada."
The NDP, a progressive party advocating for enhanced social programs and workers' rights, required at least 12 seats to retain its official status in the House of Commons.
Losing this status means the party would face fewer resources and diminished influence in parliament. Singh, who has been serving in parliament since 2019, finished in third place in his riding.
Despite this, he announced that he would remain in his leadership role until an interim leader is selected.
