Global Air Travel Demand Witnesses Steady Growth
This indicates a continuing upward trajectory for the aviation industry, despite broader economic uncertainties.
In terms of capacity, which is assessed by available seat kilometers, there was a 5.3 percent increase over the same period.
Although airlines expanded their seating availability, the load factor — which gauges how efficiently capacity is being used — stood at 80.7 percent in March.
This represents a slight dip of 1.6 percentage points in comparison to March of the previous year.
Breaking down the data further, international travel demand in March grew by 4.9 percent, whereas domestic travel saw a more modest increase of 0.9 percent over the same month last year.
These figures suggest that cross-border travel remains a key driver of growth within the sector.
Willie Walsh, IATA’s director general, acknowledged existing concerns, stating: "There remains a lot of speculation around the potential impacts of tariffs and other economic headwinds on travel."
He emphasized that, while a minor reduction in demand across North America warrants attention, the March figures still reflect a consistent global growth trend in aviation activity.
Walsh also noted that the industry must confront the challenges brought on by this continued expansion.
He pointed out that "accommodating more people who need to travel – specifically alleviating supply chain problems and ensuring sufficient airport and air traffic management capacity – remain urgent."
This highlights the pressing need for infrastructure improvements and more resilient logistics to support ongoing demand.
