Iran Describes Latest US Sanctions as Unlawful
(MENAFN) On Wednesday, Iran strongly denounced the latest round of US-imposed restrictions, asserting that these actions reveal a lack of sincerity from Washington in pursuing diplomatic talks.
The Iranian government interpreted the penalties as evidence that the United States is not genuinely interested in reaching an agreement, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear activities.
The United States Department of the Treasury announced new punitive measures on Tuesday targeting an Iranian entrepreneur and his extensive maritime operations.
These sanctions were introduced due to allegations that the individual was involved in selling petroleum products to foreign nations.
Iranian Foreign Ministry representative Esmaeil Baqaei emphasized that these additional sanctions weaken the credibility of American assertions about their intent to engage in negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.
Speaking through a state-run media outlet, he described the US measures as a “bullying and illegal measure,” criticizing them as indicative of a lack of goodwill and commitment to dialogue.
Baqaei went on to label the unilateral penalties against Iran as both arbitrary and illegitimate, arguing they contravene the core tenets of global legal standards.
He further demanded accountability from the US government for what he called “gross human rights violations.”
According to US officials, profits generated from Iranian oil exports are allegedly used to finance the country’s missile development, nuclear ambitions, and support for regional militant groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis.
On Tuesday, US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce reiterated that the Trump administration would strictly implement all American sanctions against Iran “as part of its maximum pressure campaign.”
