Netanyahu Urges Supreme Court to Compel Shin Bet Chief to Set Resignation Date
This move comes as Bar, in a prior court statement submitted on Monday, announced his intention to step down in the near future, though he did not provide an exact date.
Prominent legal experts have criticized Netanyahu’s appeal, labeling it a “clear attempt to evade submitting his written testimony in response to serious allegations made by the Shin Bet chief.”
Based on a newspaper, these officials see the request as a deliberate strategy to “buy time from the Supreme Court,” particularly since a similar appeal had been turned down by the court only days earlier.
It remains uncertain whether the premier will eventually file a sworn statement to address the accusations raised by Bar.
The publication also cautioned that providing such a declaration poses significant legal hazards, as “failing to tell the truth in a written affidavit could constitute a criminal offense.”
Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s office released a statement on Tuesday confirming that the prime minister had asked Bar to act against “lawbreakers,” in reference to demonstrators opposing his administration.
The statement clarified, “The prime minister never requested restrictions on any protesters but made an obvious demand of the Shin Bet chief—to fulfill his duty against lawbreakers threatening his life or his family’s safety and breaching his security perimeter.”
