Israeli Military Needs More Funding to Expand Gaza War
(MENAFN) The Israeli Defense Forces are reportedly seeking a further allocation of 10 billion shekels (approximately USD2.6 billion) to intensify their campaign in the Gaza Strip, as reported by the media.
“The renewal of the war in Gaza over a month ago, after the ceasefire, and the plan to expand it with a large-scale ground operation, is incurring significant costs,” the publication noted.
The article highlights that the re-escalation of the conflict and the strategic intent to escalate ground maneuvers are placing a heavy financial burden on the military.
This proposed budget increase is facing stiff resistance from the Finance Ministry.
A senior official expressed frustration to a newspaper, stating, "It is inconceivable that, beyond the nearly $31 billion already allocated – including the use of a $2.6 billion reserve fund – another $2.6 billion could be added to an already inflated defense budget.”
The remark underscores concerns over the rapidly growing defense expenditures.
The report also states that the extra funding is intended to support efforts to take control of approximately 40% of Gaza’s territory in the near future.
The goal of this operation is to strengthen the protection of Israeli communities close to the Gaza border and to suppress any potential resurgence of rocket attacks targeting Israel.
Earlier this year, an Israeli financial outlet disclosed that military-related expenses for the year 2024 had already reached 250 billion shekels (around USD67.57 billion), emphasizing the extensive costs associated with the ongoing military operations.
The Israeli army recommenced its attacks on Gaza on March 18, abruptly ending a ceasefire agreement and a prisoner swap that had been in effect since January 19.
