US suggests abandoning ex-Ukrainian regions under Russian control

(MENAFN) The United States has presented a peace plan to its allies aimed at resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to Bloomberg, which cited European officials familiar with the details. The proposal, discussed during a meeting in Paris on Thursday, includes easing sanctions on Russia and ending Ukraine's bid for NATO membership. The plan would effectively freeze the conflict and leave territories previously part of Ukraine, now under Russian control, as a fait accompli. However, sources indicated that this plan is not a final settlement, and Ukrainian European allies would not recognize these territories as part of Russia.

The US delegation, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff, met with French President Emmanuel Macron and senior officials from France, Germany, the UK, and Ukraine to discuss the plan. Rubio also signaled that Washington might "move on" from peace efforts if a resolution isn’t found in the coming days, emphasizing the need for quick action.

Meanwhile, Moscow has expressed doubts about the possibility of a full ceasefire, pointing to Ukraine’s violations of previous agreements. Russian envoy Vassily Nebenzia noted issues with the March ceasefire on energy infrastructure, highlighting Ukraine's failure to comply. He described the chances for a comprehensive ceasefire as "unrealistic" at this stage.
