Orban says West lost proxy battle to Russia
He argued that the West, as a whole, has thrown its full weight behind Ukraine in its struggle with Russia, which he described as a de facto war with the West. This perspective aligns with Moscow's long-standing view of the conflict. Orban emphasized that, despite the defeat, European leaders are reluctant to acknowledge their failure. He cautioned that the consequences of losing a war would have profound implications for the West.
The Hungarian prime minister further stated that European leaders are encouraging Ukraine to continue fighting in exchange for potential EU membership, a situation he believes is problematic because Ukraine is no longer sovereign and cannot sustain itself.
Orban also noted that the U.S. is in a better position due to former President Donald Trump's break with the policies of his successor, Joe Biden. He praised Trump's approach, claiming it spared the U.S. from a serious defeat.
In March, Orban had criticized the EU's stance on Ukraine, calling its policies "rudderless" and warning that Brussels' hardline approach risks making the EU irrelevant. He also expressed concerns about the EU’s ability to continue supporting Ukraine, citing the bloc's dwindling resources and inability to fund the Ukrainian military or state functions. This came after Hungary refused to back a joint EU statement calling for more military aid to Ukraine.
