Ukrainian-born congresswoman claims Telegraph is being untruthful

Spartz claimed that the newspaper may have been influenced by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to create a negative narrative about her.

The controversy began with a Telegraph article in which Spartz allegedly stated that Ukraine might need to accept Russian control over certain territories to survive, including Crimea and other regions that voted to join Russia in referendums. She also called for Zelensky’s resignation. The original headline, “’Here’s why we should give land to Russia,’” was criticized by Spartz for inaccurately reflecting her stance. After intervention from her team, the headline was revised to “Zelensky must cede land to Russia,” although she still found it misleading.

Spartz argued that the article was used by Zelensky’s supporters to attack her and former President Donald Trump, accusing them of being responsible for Ukraine’s struggles. She denied advocating for territorial concessions and explained that Ukraine is not currently in a position to reclaim its lost land. She proposed that a temporary solution, facilitated by the U.S., could provide both sides with time to regroup, but emphasized that the ultimate resolution must be negotiated later.

The initial Telegraph article sparked backlash in Ukraine, with government officials criticizing Spartz for her apparent lack of understanding of the situation. In response, Spartz suggested that Zelensky may have been behind the publication of false headlines to maintain his political position and profit from the ongoing war. Despite the criticism, she reaffirmed her pride in her Ukrainian heritage but condemned the actions of Ukraine’s leadership under Zelensky.
