Trump claims US ‘thinking about’ facilitating Russia sanctions
According to statements from both the Kremlin and the White House, the proposed agreement would allow Russia to regain access to global markets for agricultural and fertilizer exports, reduce maritime insurance costs, and improve access to ports and payment systems. Moscow further specified that the deal includes lifting restrictions on the Russian Agricultural Bank and other financial institutions involved in food and fertilizer trade, as well as removing sanctions on Russian vessels, port services, and agricultural machinery imports.
While the White House did not elaborate on specific measures, Trump acknowledged that his administration was actively considering lifting some sanctions. “We’re looking at all of them. There are about five or six conditions,” he told reporters on Tuesday.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky strongly criticized the US for discussing sanctions relief with Russia without properly informing Kiev, calling it a weakening of positions and enforcement measures.
The renewed negotiations follow 12 hours of US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia on Monday, aimed at reviving the Black Sea Grain Initiative. Originally brokered by the UN and Türkiye in July 2022, the agreement allowed Ukrainian grain exports in exchange for lifting restrictions on Russian food and fertilizer shipments. Moscow later withdrew from the deal, accusing the West of failing to meet its commitments. Now, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov insists that only a direct order from Washington could ensure Kiev's compliance with any new agreement.
