Trump serious regarding third term
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has stated that he is serious about the possibility of seeking a third term in office, despite the Constitution’s two-term limit. In an interview with NBC News on Sunday, Trump, speaking from Mar-a-Lago, hinted that there are “methods” to bypass the two-term restriction, although he did not provide specifics.
The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951 after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four terms, limits presidents to two terms in office. However, Trump suggested that it’s not too early to consider options, saying, “I’m not joking.” He mentioned a hypothetical scenario where Vice President J.D. Vance could run for president and then transfer the office to him, but also hinted at other possibilities.
Trump’s remarks are more direct than previous comments, where he had often been dismissed as joking. Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon recently indicated that Trump could legally run again in 2028, and Republican Congressman Andy Ogles proposed an amendment earlier this year to allow three non-consecutive terms, though it has yet to gain traction.
Trump, who won the 2024 election, could potentially become the second president in US history to serve two non-consecutive terms, if he were to pursue another run.
